How Physics Falls Apart If The EMdrive Works.

Image
EM DRIVE Imagine a rocket that works without fuel. You pump energy into it and away you go, but there’s no thrust coming out the other side, no exhaust, no waste product and no consumable fuel. It’s the ultimate defiance of Isaac Newton: claiming to have an action without an equal and opposite reaction. And yet, inventor of the EMdrive, Roger Shawyer, claims to do exactly that. Not only does he say that his device works, he claims that anyone can build one and verify it for themselves. At Eagleworks laboratory, NASA scientists attempted to do exactly that, and just published their findings in a peer-reviewed journal. The results?   They verify that the EMdrive works as advertised . If the EMdrive truly is a space engine that has an action with no reaction – you pump power into it and get thrust with no discernible exhaust — then this is the largest revolution in physics since Isaac Newton. IMF supports Indian PM 'demonetization' move in fight against corruption

Image
International Monetary Fund (IMF) has supported Prime Minister   Narendra   Modi's efforts to fight corruption by demonetizing 500 and 1000 rupees notes but cautioned that the move has to be managed prudently. IMF spokesman Gerry Rice told reporters in   Washington   that the global body supports Modi government's measures to fight corruption and illicit financial flows in India. He, however, said that the move has to be managed prudently to minimize possible disruptions keeping in mind the large role of cash in everyday transactions in Indian economy. Yesterday, Prime Minister   Narendra   Modi expressed happiness at the patient and orderly manner in which the citizens are getting the notes exchanged in banks following the cancellation of the legal tender character of the high denomination bank notes of Rs.500 and Rs.1000. In a series of tweets, the Prime Minister also said that it is heartening to see such warmth, enthusiasm and patience of the citizens t

Looting, vandalism as EFF and Save South Africa march through Pretoria.

Image
Several businesses and shops were vandalised and looted in Pretoria today during an Economic Freedom Fighters march. Looters raided a Pep Cell store, a KFC, broke a display window at Spitz and at an Absa branch. Capital Inn was also looted and vandalised. Marchers had taken to the streets of Pretoria today calling for President Jacob Zuma to step down following Zuma’s interdict of the Public Protector state capture report. EFF member Ntswaki Nzuza, a former ANC supporter, said she supported the call for Zuma to resign because he has abused his power. “I’m here today because I don’t think Zuma should be president of this country. It’s time for him to go; he has abused his power. This is not how a president behaves,” she said. Another supporter, Jonas Mulamuleli, echoed her sentiments saying Zuma “is too corrupt and must go!” “People need to be honest with themselves and come join us to remove Zuma,” he added. Supporters descended in their numbers with many

NASA Curiosity Mars Rover Checks Odd-looking Iron Meteorite.

Image
On Mars, NASA's Curiosity rover zapped a globular, golf-ball-size object with a laser, and the signal it got back confirmed it was an iron-nickel meteorite fallen from the Red Planet's sky. From the   NASA announcement : Iron-nickel meteorites are a common class of space rocks found on Earth, and previous examples have been seen on Mars, but this one, called "Egg Rock," is the first on Mars examined with a laser-firing spectrometer. To do so, the rover team used Curiosity's Chemistry and Camera (ChemCam) instrument. Scientists of the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) project, which operates the rover, first noticed the odd-looking rock in images taken by Curiosity's Mast Camera (Mastcam) at at a site the rover reached by an Oct. 27 drive. "The dark, smooth and lustrous aspect of this target, and its sort of spherical shape attracted the attention of some MSL scientists when we received the Mastcam images at the new location," said C

UC Berkeley researchers publish review linking mind-wandering with creativity.

Image
After two years studying the topic, UC Berkeley researchers and others have published a review on how thoughts flow when the mind is idle — calling into question the stigma surrounding mind-wandering. Since the 13th century, mind-wandering has been historically defined by both philosophers and neuroscientists as “task-unrelated thought,” where one’s cognitive subconscious is on an unproductive, auto-pilot mode,   according to   Zachary Irving, a co-author of the review and UC Berkeley postdoctoral scholar. Irving said the review showed that contrary to popular belief,   mind-wandering   actually poses multiple benefits to the human mind, such as fostering creativity   and a llowing humans to better understand their waking thoughts. The   review , which was also conducted by researchers at University of British Columbia, Cornell University  and the  University of Colorado Boulder, included theoretical synthesis and analysis as well as empirical review of evidence from neuroi

Could Mars support humans? Scientist questions Obama’s ‘back-up’ Earth plans as new probe starts alien hunt.

Image
Several Mars missions have been conducted and planned so far in search of life. While is is still not clear whether the red planet could actually support humans, the US President Barack Obama believes that humans should go to Mars to make things and lives better on Earth. Mars has always been the first choice of scientists, astronomers and alien hunters when it comes to searching for extraterrestrial   life or evidence of whether the planet can support life at all. An experimental mission to Mars has already been planned by the US as the country plans to carry two humans to the red planet before 2030s to check whether it can act as a back-up Earth. The eminent physicist Stephen Hawking once said that human species would not last for more than a thousand years, if they do not establish their footsteps into space. In a way, it means that humans would soon need a back-up Earth to sustain them, especially considering the rate at which the environment on Earth is getting degra

China successfully launches its longest manned space mission

Image
China on Monday successfully launched a spacecraft carrying two astronauts, in its longest-ever manned space mission, who would later join its experimental space lab orbiting the Earth as the country moved a step closer to establish its permanent space station by 2022. Chinese astronauts Jing Haipeng, 50, and Chen Dong, 37, were blasted off into space by Shenzhou-11 (heavenly vessel) spacecraft at 7:30 am local time (5 am IST) from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre near the Gobi Desert in northwest China. The Shenzhou-11 was put into orbit by a Long March-2F carrier rocket after the launch, telecast live by the state-run China Central Television (CCTV). The spacecraft will dock with orbiting space lab Tiangong-2 in two days and the astronauts will stay in the lab for 30 days, Wu Ping, Deputy Director of China’s manned space engineering office said. While Jing is on his third spaceflight, this is Chen’s first space mission, which is the longest stay so far by Chines

UFO Sighting: An 'ancient alien' antenna is spotted sticking up on the Moon.

Image
A spire on the moon might be more than 3 miles tall and offer a means of communication for extra-terrestrial aliens, say UFO spotters. Now the   UFO hunters  are all over the   place , just as the UFOs are. One information hunter-gatherer   said  that he had nailed an 'ancient alien spire' on the moon's surface. Meet Mark Sawalha, who saw it in a NASA image and believed that it is located in an alien camp on the moon. The Finnish man spotted it in January 2016 and evaluated that it could be 3.64 miles tall. "Aliens are using moon minerals and they have bases there too. Many other findings support this theory," Mr Sawalha   said.    He charged NASA of having known about it, but not disclosing the information to the public. It is probably why there have been no other visitations to the moon after Apollo mission, he believed. "Finding Alien anomalies (mechanical structures, buildings, etc) on our solar system is quite [a] new matter for me,"

Worst day since Brexit, $35 billion wiped from ASX

Image
The Australian sharemarket suffered its worst day since the Brexit vote, with nearly $35 billion in value wiped off the board after global financial markets were hit hard by fears a September US rate rise is on the horizon.  No sector was spared, but materials and energy stocks were hit the hardest as commodity prices fell. Just five out of the top 200 stocks posted a gain, including QBE Insurance and Tatts. The benchmark S&P200 Index and the broader All Ordinaries Index each dropped 2.2 per cent to 5219.6 points and 5319.1 points respectively, their biggest falls since the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union in late June. Investors were spooked by a heavy sell-off in government bonds and investors rushed out highly leveraged companies and those who have benefited from historically low interest rates.  Resource giants BHP Billiton lost 4 per cent and Rio Tinto slid 2.4 per cent, while the big four banks dropped between 1 and 2.5 per cent.  Telstr

Scientists Turn Carbon Dioxide into New Usable Fuel Source.

Image
Scientists have discovered a way to convert carbon dioxide into usable energy source. Researchers from the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory and the University of Illinois at Chicago conducted a  study  on how to turn carbon dioxide into a usable energy source with the use of sunlight. Carbon dioxide is relatively chemically unreactive, which makes the compound difficult to convert into something else, the researchers said in a  press release . Argonne chemist and author of the study Larry Curtiss, together with his colleagues, addressed this inherent challenge by finding a catalyst - a compound that could make carbon dioxide more reactive. The researchers used a metal compound called tungsten diselenide, fashioned into tiny flakes to maximize the surface area and to expose its reactive edges. While plants make use of an organic catalyst called enzyme to convert carbon dioxide into a sugar, the researchers also used their catalyst to turn carbon

How to Protect against Zika Virus? (Video)

Image
DE PERE (WLUK) -- As Americans plan for the end of vacation season, there is a new travel advisory in place due to the Zika Virus. "No matter where this is identified, whether this is in Florida, or whether it's in Central America, it's important for people to recognize the symptoms and the prevention techniques,” said Chrystal Woller, the Health Director for the City De Pere. The Zika virus spreads through the bite of an infected mosquito. For pregnant women, it's possible to spread the virus to their unborn child. "Pregnant women are at an increased risk of birth defects of their unborn child, microcephaly is what it's called, so children born with a smaller head is what they've been seeing in other countries,” explained Woller. Woller says while the virus isn't in Wisconsin, it's important for people to know the symptoms. Those symptoms include; headache, rash, joint pain or red eyes. "So very mild symptoms,

Drones are passe, welcome self flying RoboBees.

Image
Washington D.C:  Our skies are about to get a lot more high-tech as a team of researchers is developing robotic bees that can fly themselves. The Harvard University's National Science Foundation (NSF)-supported RoboBees project aims to create autonomous robotic insects capable of sustained, independent flight. Such robots could one day assist in reconnaissance, aid in remote communication or even act as artificial pollinators. Led by principal investigator Robert Wood, the researchers have designed increasingly sophisticated and tiny robots with a range of features that will one day soon enable autonomous flying. To do so the team required to advance basic research in a number of areas where they saw obstacles to realizing their vision: from micro-manufacturing methods and materials for actuation, to small-scale energy storage and algorithms to effectively control individuals and coordinated swarms of robots. The group's research led to breakthroughs i
