Looting, vandalism as EFF and Save South Africa march through Pretoria.
Several businesses and shops were vandalised and looted in Pretoria
today during an Economic Freedom Fighters march.
Looters raided a Pep Cell store, a KFC, broke a display window at Spitz
and at an Absa branch. Capital Inn was also looted and vandalised.
Marchers had taken to the streets of Pretoria today calling for
President Jacob Zuma to step down following Zuma’s interdict of the Public
Protector state capture report.
EFF member Ntswaki Nzuza, a former ANC supporter, said she supported the
call for Zuma to resign because he has abused his power.
“I’m here today because I don’t think Zuma should be president of this country.
It’s time for him to go; he has abused his power. This is not how a president
behaves,” she said.
Another supporter, Jonas Mulamuleli, echoed her sentiments saying Zuma
“is too corrupt and must go!”
“People need to be honest with themselves and come join us to remove
Zuma,” he added.
Supporters descended in their numbers with many small groups spread
throughout the CBD.
Protesters clashed with police at some stages as roads were closed off
restricting their movements.
The protesters had flooded into the streets of the capital today as
political parties, civic organisations and concerned citizens united under the
Save South Africa movement.
Some protesters wore UDM, Cope and PAC regalia but marched with the EFF
crowd. They were united in their calls for Zuma to resign.
EFF leader Julius Malema, however, slammed the Save South Africa
movement, saying “they mustn’t think we are friends”. He accused it of only
standing up to protect “white monopoly capital”.
The EFF said its protest was separate from the Save South Africa one.
The groups protested in the streets around Church Square in the Pretoria
CBD with the intention of splitting police. Some groups were successful in
breaking the police lines but remained disciplined throughout.
Many others stood on the side of the roads out of the blazing heat.
Protesters continued looting and breaking windows as they continued
their march to the Union Buildings. Police maintained a heavy presence and a
police helicopter hovered over the Union Buildings where the EFF supporters
arrived just after 2.30pm.
